For an ‘active relaxer’ like Hannah Honey, a vocation like dancing is a natural fit, and starting an independent dance school proved to be that perfect mix of business and pleasure which many aspire to, but few attain. Some years ago, Hannah started training in Tae Kwon Do, and although training up to four times a week, she felt the need for something different on her ‘off nights’ so checked out a dance class. She was hooked. Then, after spending a couple of years learning Argentine Tango, a friend introduced her to another dance style - modern jive. The tempo was faster than she was used to, with the lessons fast tracking into being able to dance a whole song with the moves taught that night. With friendly people and classes held most nights of the week - for an active relaxer it became slightly addictive! Within three months she was working towards her first competition - East and South run by Robert Pearce. It was a pivotal experience. The atmosphere was electric, and she was exposed to the inspirational performances of the advanced dancers. From that competition, entering as a beginner and getting to the finals, she went onto compete in competitions nationwide and held national titles across several categories. She began to teach about seven years ago, initially so nervous she was literally shaking. Despite meticulous training, she still got nervous every class, workshop or private lesson she taught, but she persevered and has taught several times a week since. An opportunity arose to start an independent dance school, teaching her passion, modern jive. As the cornerstone of Move Dance, Hannah and her three business partners provide classes three times a week across Auckland. It literally keeps her on her toes, satisfying her need for activity, while providing an outlet for relaxation. She loves to see beginners, and even those with ‘two left feet’ quickly progress to a competency enabling them to enjoy a great night out, with light-hearted social interaction, and fun. Move Dance is held at the New Lynn RSA, Mondays at 7pm. First class is free, casual lessons $15, concessions available. Phone 021 576 210 for more info, or find us on facebook.com/movedancenz
