The bull pawed the ground eyeing me up while the others snorted. I had just powered ahead and clotheslined my farmbike through the bungee cord fence flattening it and now the 10 bulls were on the move escaping from their paddock. Man they look big when you are seated on a bike! It was scary and memorable but not the best start to my first day on the job.
I had arrived from Auckland the night before. I was met at Christchurch Airport by my new boss Nigel. We stopped at Ashburton for me to buy my first groceries before we headed 18km out to the farm. It was dusk when I moved into my self-contained unit a stone’s throw from the cowshed.
This was the start to my adventure – age 16 and on a school holiday job a long way from home.
