Blockhouse Bay Community Centre-based Steppin Six Line Dance Group wound up their 2016 year with a final performance, and earned a total of over $1200 to be shared between their two chosen charities: Life Education Trust and Dementia Auckland (formerly Alzheimers Auckland). The six group members rehearse regularly at the Community Centre (and Senior Citizens Hall), and perform at retirement villages and rest homes, as well as the occasional corporate function. However, they are quick to clarify they are not a ‘professional’ dance group. Group compere, Graham Edwards, says “we usually inform our audiences that it is not unknown for us to include the odd ‘deliberate’ mistake, to forewarn them in case it happens. But the emphasis for ourselves and our audiences is to have fun. “Any donations the group receives goes 100% to their chosen charities – that also gives us great pleasure and a sense of achievement”, says Graham. Videos of some of their performances can be seen on their website www.steppin-six.co.nz
