Movie Review #5432 THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD. Another buddy-cop, well, buddy-hitman comedy with Samuel L Jackson as hitman-in-custody who needs to be testifying against a megalomaniac Eastern European oligarch. Problem is he's a long way away and every fellow hitman in town is after his butt to prevent said testimony. Enter one Ryan Reynolds, current Hollywood hero, as a recent-rating-reduced bodyguard employed to get Sam L. to court in one piece. Lotsa shootings, bombings, blastings and fartings (if you wanna raise a laugh, just include a fart!) And lotsa bad guys dispatched with varying finesses. Better than I expected although formula is tried and true with nothing really new on the originality front, other than Brian Dennehy doing a cameo turn as a corpse! Somewhat gory in some parts too with knives stuck through hands, electrodes applied to heads, bullets dug out without anaesthesia and prove-a-point headbutts abound. Leads amusing at best although Monsieur Jackson is certainly centre of attention to Reynolds straight man. Gary Oldman suitably obnoxious and sinister as the Belorussian dictator who finally gets his come-uppance at the hands, well actually the feet of Samuel L. Nice comedic interplay between leads with suitably feminine love objects available to both. Overall a good laugh at 7.5/10.

Geoff HorneI'm a movie nut from way back with my first ever being The Hallelujah Trail from 1964. Ever since being mesmerized by the giant screen, the darkness that went on forever & the infernally uncomfortable seats + having to stand for God Save the Queen, I've been enticed ever since to duck into a theatre whenever I can for a few hours of escapism. My favourite movie of all time is Schindler's List, one of only two movies I've ever cried in (the other was Bambi when I was 6!) & I'm a sucker for a damn good comedy; Dumb & Dumber, The Hangover & Death at a Funeral stand out. I'm also a musician and work in IT. I have 4 grandchildren who also seem to enjoy their movie excursions with grandad. I can be reached at geoff@nztester.co.nz. Archives
