Over 50 interested people from Green Bay and surrounding areas attended the first OPEN DOOR meeting put together by the team at the Green Bay Community House – Anja, Moana & Letitia - and Aroha from Community Waitakere Those attending included: a behavioural psychologist, an acupuncturist, an immigration lawyer, an art teacher, representatives from local real estate offices, NZ Bird Rescue (who are based in Green Bay), Auckland Transport walking/cycling team, Healthy Families Waitakere, Waitakere ethnic wardens, Haumaru Housing for the elderly, Green Bay High School, Community Fruit Harvesting and EcoMatters Trust (among others). The Open Door Day was also supported by Green Bay’s friends from Blockhouse Bay, represented by Graham Edwards (Bay Connections), Alan Gray (Lions) and Miriam (Community Centre).
Gabriella from Eco Matters gave an update on the local La Rosa Orchard project, which is community run and seeking ongoing volunteer support to maintain the orchard. Her brief update started some interesting discussion from Open Door attendees, several of whom realized their organisations could potentially lend a hand. A follow-up meeting about the La Rosa Orchard will be held in late October. Please contact Anja if you wish to be involved or receive further information. All present indicated the first Open Door was a great success in bringing local people together and offered a vote of thanks to Anja, Aroha and Moana for their efforts in organising the function. Another Open Door get-together is planned for 5 December, 2pm, providing an opportunity for participants to talk about their plans for 2019 and to identify possible collaborations.
