The intersection at Hillsborough Road, Commodore Drive and Griffen Park Road has long been identified as hazardous, with the potential for danger to motorists and pedestrians arising from multiple issues.
With the new Melba Café-Lollipops Childcare building now in use, and the Rymans construction site a few metres further down the road, the intersection is being severely tested.
Workers at Lynfield Automotive have seen many serious accidents, and witness a lot of bad driving behaviour, almost daily. Manager Tyrone van Graan commented that the intersection is a hazard and needs traffic lights, particularly once residents start moving into the retirement village.
One of the many issues is the illegal crossing of Hillsborough Rd from Griffen Park Rd to Commodore Dr. Over the years measures have been put in place but have proved ineffective. Van Graan said that he’s seen people drive over the yellow sticks currently in place.
Puketapapa Local Board member David Holm said that the Board is not tolerating this illegal behaviour and are lobbying AT to take action. “AT have been somewhat slow but are going to do a costing to improve the intersection by extending the concrete island,” says Holm.
He estimated the alternative route from the YMCA, left onto White Swan Rd and right onto Hillsborough Rd down to Commodore Dr during busy times, to be about one minute. “There are also current investigations into the pedestrian issues around the Z station on Commodore Drive,“ he said.
